Tailstrike launches open beta, bringing persistent real-world aircraft to VATSIM
December 16, 2025

Tailstrike is a community-driven freeware flight simulation platform that allows pilots to lease and fly persistent, real-world aircraft registrations on the VATSIM network. Every completed flight permanently updates an aircraft’s history and location, creating a shared, living record where each flight contributes to an ongoing story.
Unlike virtual airlines, Tailstrike is open and unrestrictive. There’s no application process, no assigned routes or schedules, and no required flying style. Fly what you want, when you want, how you want, and take part in community events and challenges if you choose.
The project was created by Matt Kline (cautionwake, VATSIM: 885081), a 20-plus-year member of the VATSIM community, with contributions from fellow community members, including his father Al, a former private pilot and frequent VATSIM flyer.
Tailstrike is now in open beta and available to anyone with a VATSIM account. Pilots can browse aircraft, lease a real-world registration, and have their flights automatically tracked and reflected in the aircraft’s public history.
“We want pilots to feel that their flying actually has an impact and connects them to a larger community,” said Kline. “Tailstrike is open and easy to jump into, making flying more realistic and more social, all while building something lasting together.”
